Job summary

Jobtailor seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator for on-site road and ground maintenance in the US Midwest. You will operate excavators, dump trucks, and tractor-trailers, reading grade stakes, estimating materials, and ensuring safety standards.

You’ll monitor equipment, perform minor repairs, manage time and resources, and respond to emergencies. A CDL and knowledge of equipment maintenance are required, with travel to multiple sites as needed.

Qualifications

  • One year of work experience in roads and ground maintenance, or demonstrated ability to properly use heavy equipment, and knowledge of road maintenance.
  • CDL or other special classification of operator’s license is required.
  • Mathematics to calculate material usage, logs, time sheets, notate mileage, and accurately use measuring tools, equipment and devices.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance practices, repairs and techniques.
  • Ability to follow directions, instructions, structured process and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and complete daily records.
  • Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time and adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to follow established safety rules and use appropriate PPE.
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and common-sense skills.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Technical/other training.
  • Class A License Hazmat Endorsement may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements.
  • Valid Driver’s License may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements.
  • Ability to lift or move tools, equipment and/or materials up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment for excavation and road maintenance.
  • Operate straight trucks over 4 tons, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, pickup trucks, tractor-trailers, and related equipment.
  • Monitor and assess equipment, structures, materials, events, and environmental conditions to identify problems and solutions.
  • Read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans.

  • Follow procedures, regulations, guidelines, and safety requirements while minimizing risks.
  • Drive vehicles equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
  • Perform greasing, adjustments, emergency repairs, and minor equipment repairs.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks.
  • Respond to emergency calls after normal work hours.
  • Travel frequently to work sites and between facilities.
  • Perform other assigned duties and special projects.
