Job summary

Bay County, Florida is seeking a skilled heavy equipment operator to support road and drainage projects in Panama City.

You will operate drag-lines, loaders, graders, rollers and trucks, perform daily safety inspections, and assist in maintenance while following engineering specs.

A high school diploma or equivalent and verifiable experience with heavy construction equipment are required; a valid Florida Class B CDL or ability to obtain one is needed.

  • Performs daily safety inspections and routine maintenance of equipment.
  • Transports equipment to and from site and reports any issues.

SALARY:$19.60 - $34.30NATURE OF WORKGrade:BOCC-B80-4 bJob Class:7 - Operatives (EEO-1 Job Categories-United States of America), Tier 2 - • Normal duties would include preparation of and recovery from disasters • Must be able to report to work when summoned (or pre-assigned time- or not later than 12 hours after the storm passes if not called in • Provided with food, water, provisions EVACUATION PLAN/SHELTERS (Tier Status)Worker Comp Code:5506 - Street or Road Construction - Paving or Repaving & Drivers (United States of America)EEO Classification:7 - Operatives (EEO-1 Job Categories-United States of America)JOB TYPE:EmployeeNATURE OF JOB:ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Operates drag-line or equivalent; places and removes pipe, as needed.Operates tractor equipped with front end loader and backhoe; operate truck mounted pavement stripping machine, as needed.Operates a power grader on construction and maintenance work; blades subgrades to engineering specifications.Operates a heavy-duty gasoline or diesel road roller compacting material.Operates a lowboy; supervises the loading and unloading of heavy equipment; transports equipment to and from construction site, as needed.Operates a simple flatbed or dump truck, or a variety of minor powered machinery and equipment; may participate generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands, as needed.Operates front end loader; loads fill, rock, slag, and other construction materials.Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.Performs routine service and maintenance.Operates truck carrying fuel, lubricants and lubricating equipment, performs major field lubrication of light, medium and heavy rolling stock and equipment.Follows through directly on routine requests.The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.Performs other related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent; ANDPrior verifiable professional experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:Possession of and maintain a valid Florida Commercial’s Class B Driver's license with driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program or ability to obtain and maintain within time limits established by the State of Florida.Special Licenses required or required to obtain in a certain amount of time.KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, adaptabilities, limitations and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made.Skill in the operation of complex construction equipment.Ability to use special types of equipment.Ability to have excellent oral and written communication skills.Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.Ability to comprehend, speak, and read the English language.Ability to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.Ability to make emergency repairs and to assist in making general repairs of motor driven and other construction equipment.Ability to operate heavy equipment over rough terrain and to perform manual labor occasionally under adverse weather conditionsAbility to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to obtain necessary information and to complete accurate accident and other reports.Ability to prepare simple reports.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:Work is primarily performed outdoors and requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.Bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement of firm grasping and fine manipulation, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights. This position requires frequent lifting and carrying of 10-25lbs, and up to 100lbs on occasion.WORK LOCATION:Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite.
