Job description

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America's premier processors, buyers, sellers, and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds. It is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs.

We have an immediate opening for a Heavy Equipment Operator on the 1st shift at our Inkster location in Inkster, MI. The operator is responsible for processing scrap metals using various tools and equipment, including crawlers.

Responsibilities:

• Ensure safety standards are followed, including PPE use, hazard removal, and site cleanliness.
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment, such as wheeled and pedestal crawlers from manufacturers like Caterpillar, Sennebogen, and Liebherr.
• Control equipment movement via hand signals or radio commands.
• Load and unload materials from storage, production areas, docks, and vehicles using equipment like magnets and grapples.
• Sort recycled materials and metals, separating high-grade metals and removing non-conforming metals.
• Operate and maintain mobile equipment, including forklifts, skid steers, manlifts, street sweepers, and water trucks.
• Perform physical labor tasks with hand tools, torches, banders, saws, and wire snips.
• Conduct daily inspections of all equipment.
• Identify scrap types and grades, noting any undesirable elements.
• Position trailers and containers around the yard and empty gaylord boxes as needed.
• Perform cleaning duties and assist mechanics with maintenance.
• Interact with customers and drivers to direct or assist them.
• Perform additional tasks and operate other equipment as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High School Diploma/GED or 1+ years of heavy equipment operation experience.
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
• Maintain accurate records and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to climb ladders or steps and endure outdoor physical work daily.
• Lift up to 50 lbs.
• Work cooperatively with others and the public.
• Ability to work in dusty, dirty, vibrational, and extreme weather conditions.
• Pre-employment background check, physical, and drug screening required.
