Job Summary

A Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating and controlling large machinery used in excavation and other industrial projects. The operator ensures equipment is used safely and efficiently to move materials, prepare sites, and support project completion according to specifications and safety standards.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, excavators, graders, loaders, backhoes,and skid steer.
  • Conduct pre-operation inspections and perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Move earth, materials, and debris according to project plans and grade specifications.
  • Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, blueprints, and surveying markers.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks and transport vehicles.
  • Maintainaccuraterecords of equipment usage, operating hours, andmaterials moved.
  • Coordinate with ground crews, supervisors, and other operators to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Operate equipment on slopes, uneven terrain,andinconfined spaces.
  • Identifyandreportmechanical problems andassistwith basic equipment repairs.
  • Follow all workplace safety regulations, traffic control procedures, and company policies.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Experienceoperatingmultiple types of heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of construction site operations and safety procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and grade specifications.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for equipment inspection and maintenance.
  • Strong depthperception, spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Attention to detail and precision in grading, excavation, and material handling.
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
Education and Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a heavy equipment operator training program, vocational course, or apprenticeship preferred.
  • Occupational safety training and certifications, such as OSHA certification, areadvantageous.
  • Additionalcertificationsfor specialized equipment may be required by employers.
Work Environment
