Job summary

North Slope Borough is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Trainee to service, diagnose and repair light to heavy equipment. The role includes routine maintenance, troubleshooting and major repairs, with on-site inspections and safety adherence.

The position offers a career ladder and requires obtaining ICS certifications, CPR/First Aid and OSHA-related trainings within probationary periods. Some travel to remote villages and non-traditional schedules may apply.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; 12 years of education/experience alternative may apply.
• IS-100/200/700/800 ICS certifications required or obtainable within probationary period.
• CPR/AED/First Aid certifications required or obtainable within probationary period.
• RCRA training within probationary period and SPCC training within probationary period.
• HAZWOPER certification within probationary period and small quantity handler training within probationary period.

Responsibilities

• Daily inspections, fueling, fluid level checks, lighting and safety inspections of equipment.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance as scheduled.
• Repair electrical, drive train, suspension, engine, hydraulic and related systems.
• Troubleshoot drivability issues and perform repairs.
• Operate diagnostic tools and electric/air/hand tools; weld and fabricate as needed.
• Maintain records, work orders and reports; attend safety training.
• Travel to North Slope Borough villages and work non-traditional hours; on-call status possible.

Summary or Purpose

All Borough employees who occupy positions where federal law mandates testing shall comply with the requirements of the federal regulations and will be subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion return to duty and follow-up testing.

[*This position becomes subject to federally mandated testing upon obtaining a CDL in the 1st year level; employees must pass a pre-employment test prior to receiving associated pay increase].

To gain the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to Service, Diagnose and Repair light, medium and heavy duty equipment, Perform Minor and Major repairs to include over hauling engines, drive trains, hydraulic systems and electrical systems.

Demonstrates continuous improvement towards achieving the Heavy Equipment Mechanic Trainee performance objectives;

Daily inspections, fueling, check fluid levels, lighting, tires and startup and safety inspections of equipment. Schedule and Perform routine preventive maintenance;

Perform minor and major repairs to include all aspects of repairs, electrical, drive train, suspension, engine, heating, hydraulic to equipment;

Troubleshoot and diagnose drivability problems and repair on equipment.

Operate a variety of diagnostic tools and electrical, air and hand tools;

Welding and fabricate as needed;

Perform minor body work on equipment;

Maintain records, work orders, purchase request, quotes, timesheets, daily and monthly reports. Attend safety meetings and training sessions as required;

Travel to and work within North Slope Borough villages;

May be required to work non-traditional work schedule to include evenings, holidays and weekends; May be subject to 24 hour on call status;

Consistently build knowledge and expertise about current job;

Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies and procedures;

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required

High school graduate or G.E.D or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.

Required to obtain Incident Command System (IS) 100, IS 200, IS 700, and IS 800;

Required to obtain CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid Certifications.

Ability to obtain site-specific Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. § 265.16 within the probationary period.

Ability to obtain Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) current certification within the probationary period.

Ability to obtain Small Quantity Handler training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. § 273.16 within the probationary period.

Ability to obtain site-specific Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. 112.7 (f)(1)(2) and (3) within the probationary period.
