Job summary

The City of Modesto is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair transit buses and heavy equipment for the Public Works Fleet. You will diagnose problems, perform major and minor repairs, and ensure safety and reliability of city equipment.

Required are a high school diploma, a Class BCommercial California driver's license, EPA certification, and ASE certifications within one year. Three years of experience are expected, with welding and fabrication skills highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.
  • Experience with gas- and diesel-powered equipment preferred.
  • EPA and clean air certifications may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical problems on buses and heavy equipment.
  • Overhaul engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
  • Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts for transit buses and heavy equipment.
  • Repair brakes, climate systems, and electronic controls.
  • Maintain records of work, time, and material usage.
