Job summary

The City of Turlock is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I to perform semiskilled and skilled journey level work in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automotive and other mechanical equipment. You will inspect, repair, lubricate, and overhaul a range of light and heavy vehicles including buses, with supervision from the Fleet Services team.

Responsibilities include diagnosing repair needs, maintaining servicing records, and assisting in more complex overhaul tasks.

Qualifications

• One year of journey level experience performing automotive and heavy-duty equipment maintenance and repair.
• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
• Possession of a valid California Driver's License at appointment; Class B with air brakes, tank and passenger endorsements desirable.
• Ability to obtain an ASE Brake Certification within 18 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect vehicles and equipment for needed repairs and perform repairs as required.
• Lubricate automotive and power-driven equipment using air pressure and lubrication tools.
• Drain and refill crankcases; inspect and fill gearboxes with lubricants; maintain lubrication records.
• Repair and maintenance of public transit buses.
• Inspect, charge, and replace batteries; change and repair tires on light and heavy equipment.
• Clean and wash motorized equipment; keep shop and equipment orderly; make mechanical adjustments.
• May assist Equipment Mechanic in overhaul and repair work.
• Maintain records of time, materials, and parts used.
• Replace wheel bearings, shocks, belts, hoses; perform general overhaul and tune-ups.
• Inspect, adjust and replace units and parts including cooling, fuel and exhaust components.
• May fabricate or modify parts and equipment; diagnose repair needs and estimate costs.
