Job summary

Minnesota Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to diagnose, repair, maintain and modify state-owned equipment. The role requires performing preventative maintenance inspections and documenting repairs via computer systems.

The candidate will maintain tools and equipment inventory, and assist with snow and ice removal as needed. A two-year Heavy Equipment Mechanic program or apprenticeship is preferred along with relevant field experience.

Qualifications

• Approximately 3 years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, including diagnostics, repair, maintenance and modification of heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment.
• Experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electronic control systems for engines, brakes, drivetrain, steering/suspension, and hydraulics.
• Familiarity with electronics to adjust engine and transmission functions and to diagnose problems using testing equipment or onboard computers.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair, maintain and modify state-owned heavy equipment.
• Conduct preventative maintenance inspections as needed.
• Record repair information using required computer programs.
• Maintain state tool inventory and ensure tools are usable and accounted for.
• Perform snow and ice removal when required.
