Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2 (In-Training) to join our South-Central Region team in Union Gap, WA. You will perform journey-level maintenance and repairs on a wide range of vehicles and equipment, keeping Washington’s fleet safe and reliable.

Expect to work a four‑shift schedule with nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties as needed. A valid Class B CDL with N endorsement will be required within the first year, and strong

Qualifications

• Experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative fuel engines.
• Ability to diagnose and repair hydraulic and control systems.
• Experience using timekeeping and maintenance tracking systems.
• Ability to operate in a safety-conscious environment.

Responsibilities

• Independently perform preventive maintenance and repairs on agency vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose and repair diesel, gasoline, electric and alternative fuel engines.
• Repair hydraulic and control systems including pumps and valves.
• Maintain braking systems and troubleshoot various braking types.
• Perform diagnostic work on snow removal and other specialized equipment.
• Fabricate, weld and install additional equipment.
