Job summary

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) seeks skilled maintenance technicians for advanced repair and routine maintenance of motor vehicles, diesel engines, and heavy equipment. Qualifications

Overview

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprising four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work

This is an advanced level repair and maintenance role for motor vehicles, diesel‑powered equipment, and construction/maintenance equipment. Employees perform routine repair work, standard preventive maintenance, and assist with major automotive repairs. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Performing standard preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, lubricating chassis joints, and overall vehicle inspection as part of routine maintenance.
• Conducting electronic engine analyses and specialized tests, including cylinder compression and fuel pump manifold vacuum.
• Checking or replacing standard components and subassemblies such as ball joints, brake linings, and other integral parts on the vehicle.
• Conducting commercial vehicle inspections of vehicles over 26,000 lbs.
• Diagnosing and repairing emission failures.
• Road testing all equipment repaired before release from the shop.

Employees in this classification are considered essential and may be required on call 24 hours a day, especially during off‑hours for maintenance during hazardous weather or highway conditions. Physical exertion, outdoor work in all weather, and moving objects that may weigh over 50 pounds are part of the job.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
• Experience: Four years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy‑duty construction equipment. Two years of that experience must include servicing and repairing heavy‑duty construction equipment and diesel engines.
• Extensions for additional documented experience, accredited training programs, military service, or ASE certifications are available on a year‑for‑year basis as described in the original notice.

Licenses & Certifications

• Class C motor vehicle operator’s license, valid in Maryland.
• Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) during the probationary period, depending on equipment operated.
• Required CDL endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles if applicable.
• Completion of the administration’s second‑level certification program prior to application.
• Certification in Air Conditioning Recycling and Recovery during probation may be required.
• Commercial Vehicle Inspector’s License if the employee functions in that capacity.

Additional Information

• Employees must be available for duty at any hour, day, or night to maintain continuous facility operation.
• Employees are subject to 24‑hour on‑call duty and must maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call‑back requirements.
• Exposure to hazardous materials may require periodic medical testing and respirator use.
• Selected candidates may undergo pre‑employment drug testing and substance‑abuse testing in accordance with Maryland regulations.
