Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician II – Grade 12 (7125) | District 2 – Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Kent, Cecil and Talbot Counties, MD

The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) District 2 is recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician II position in Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Kent, Cecil, and Talbot Counties. These positions are open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.

Nature of Work

The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician II will perform routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment and to assist in performing major repairs and overhauls on vehicles and heavy equipment. This includes diesel powered, electronic computerized, and fuel injected equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy‑duty construction equipment. One (1) year of the required experience must include servicing and repairing heavy duty construction equipment and diesel engines.
  • 1. Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
  • 2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one‑half years of the general experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.
  • 3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education and experience.
  • 4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education or Experience Minimum Qualifications.)
  • 5. Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.
Licensing and Certification Requirements
  • Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees must possess and maintain a Class C motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees are required to possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated.
  • Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.
  • Employees must satisfy the first level of the employing administration's certification program during the probationary period. Failure to satisfy the first level of qualifications within the stated time will be considered grounds for dismissal.
  • Employees new to the Maryland Aviation Administration, must obtain an MAA Airfield Operators Permit in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulation 11.03.01.04, Control of Vehicular Traffic on the Air Operations Area prior to permanent appointment.
  • Employees who are required to function in the capacity of Commercial Vehicle Inspector may be required to obtain and maintain their Commercial Vehicle Inspector's License.
Other Requirements
  • This position is considered an essential employee and is subject to all 24 hours a day, 7 days/week for inclement weather and/or other emergency events. Must be reachable and respond to calls after work hours.
  • Applicants who have education obtained outside of the U.S. will be required to provide proof of the equivalent U.S. education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service, such as the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (http://www.naces.org) or World Education Services: International Credential Evaluation (https://www.wes.org/).
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. All applicants must be authorized; the State Highway Administration is not sponsoring new employees under H‑1B Visa due to budgetary constraints.
