Job summary

Torrance Unified School District is seeking a journey-level automotive technician to repair and maintain district buses, trucks, and other diesel or alternative fuel vehicles (CNG, electric). You will inspect electrical, braking, transmission, and cooling systems and perform replacements as needed.

Qualifications include a high school diploma with coursework in gas/diesel engines and experience with large equipment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with coursework in gas/diesel engine technology.
• Experience repairing large automotive equipment including diesel buses is required or strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of electrical, braking, transmission, differential and cooling systems is essential.

Job description

FILING DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 5, 2026, 4;30 PM: District Classified application and supplemental form must be submitted to the Personnel Commission Office by the filing deadline.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: This is an OPENrecruitment to establish an eligibility list and fill a vacancy. The eligibility list will be used to fill permanent vacancies which may occur during the life of the eligibility list.

This position is full-time, 12 months per year.

The recruitment process will consist of a written and/or performance examination and an oral technical interview, which are tentatively scheduled during the weeks of November 9-20, 2026. Qualified applicants will be notified by US mail or email.

Under the direction of the Supervisor-Transportation, perform journey-level mechanical repair and maintenance on District school buses, trucks and other diesel, alternative fuel vehicles (compressed natural gas (CNG), electric) or mechanical or automotive equipment; maintain, repair or replace various systems and components, including electrical, brakes, transmissions, differentials, steering and cooling systems; assure buses meet CHP safety and operation requirements.

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by course work in gas and diesel engine and alternative fuel vehicles (CNG, electric) repair and four years increasingly responsible automotive repair experience, including large diesel buses, trucks, tractors and other large equipment.

Valid California Class A or B driver's license with “Passenger” and “Air Brake” endorsement within six (6) months of employment. Employees in this classification must maintain insurability at the District's standard rate during the term of employment.
