Job summary

athenahealth is seeking a Software Architect in Austin to lead architecture strategy for complex software and AI systems in a healthcare setting. The role is hybrid in Austin, TX and reports to the Executive Director, Scheduling.

You will shape target-state architecture, multi-quarter roadmaps, and oversee scalable, compliant platform capabilities across teams. You will define standards, drive observability and SRE practices, and mentor engineers while balancing delivery speed, cost, and risk.

Qualifications

• Typically 10+ years of software engineering experience with architecture ownership across multiple teams.
• Proven success leading architecture strategy for complex, distributed software systems.
• Experience creating target-state architectures and multi-quarter migration plans with measurable delivery outcomes.
• Strong background in observability, SRE practices, and incident post-mortems.
• Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code, container platforms, CI/CD, and Java or a comparable language.
• Experience governing AI-enabled systems in production with risk controls and monitoring.
• Experience building systems in regulated environments with data governance and access controls.

Responsibilities

• Develop target-state architecture and multi-quarter migration roadmaps across teams.
• Define architecture principles, standards, reference patterns, and decision records.
• Design scalable, reliable distributed systems with measurable SLOs and performance goals.
• Establish observability, incident response, runbooks, and capacity planning practices.
• Evaluate event-driven and workflow orchestration approaches for resiliency and interoperability.
• Partner with leadership to influence platform direction without direct authority.
• Review designs for alignment with compliance and long-term platform goals.
• Guide tradeoff discussions balancing delivery speed, maintainability, cost, and risk.
• Apply AI expertise to govern production AI capabilities and model risk controls.
• Mentor engineers and architects and translate findings into architecture improvements.
