athenahealth is seeking a Software Architect in Austin, TX, to lead architecture strategy for complex software and AI systems in a healthcare setting. The role is hybrid, reporting to the Executive Director, Scheduling, and focuses on modernization across platforms.

The ideal candidate brings 10+ years in software engineering and proven architecture ownership across multiple teams, with deep experience in scalable distributed systems and production AI governance.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience leading architecture strategy for distributed systems.
• Proven ability to deliver target-state architectures and migration plans.
• Strong knowledge of observability, SRE, and incident response.
• Experience with AI-enabled production systems and governance.

Responsibilities

• Develop target-state architecture and multi-quarter migration roadmaps.
• Define architecture principles, standards, reference patterns, and decision records.
• Design scalable, reliable distributed systems with measurable SLOs.
• Establish observability, incident response, runbook, and capacity planning practices.
• Evaluate event-driven and workflow orchestration approaches across teams.
• Partner with engineering, product, security, and operations leaders to influence platform direction.
• Review designs for alignment with standards, compliance, and long-term goals.
• Guide technical tradeoff discussions balancing speed, maintainability, cost, and risk.
• Apply AI experience to architect and govern production AI capabilities.
