The Health Care Provider serves as a primary medical provider for approximately 600 students attending Interlochen Arts Academy, providing assessment, diagnosis, treatment, preventive care, health promotion, and care coordination. Working closely with nursing staff, counselors, student life professionals, faculty, families, and community healthcare partners, this position supports the physical, emotional, and behavioral health of students within our residential arts community. This is a full-time, academic-year position with summers off, as well as approximately 2-3 weeks off over the Christmas holiday and two weeks during spring break. The typical schedule is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m.-4:30/5:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:00-6:00 p.m., with flexibility based on student and campus needs. During cold and flu season, some Wednesday/Saturday schedule rotation may be needed.
On-call responsibilities are limited, though the Provider should be available for occasional calls from the nursing team and willing to step in to see students during particularly busy periods. This role is ideal for a collaborative, flexible medical professional who enjoys working as part of a close-knit team and is committed to providing thoughtful, developmentally appropriate care to adolescents.
- Provide primary and urgent care services, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, and follow-up care.
- Conduct physical examinations, manage acute and chronic health conditions, and interpret diagnostic testing.
- Coordinate care with families, primary care providers, specialists, and community healthcare partners.
- Support communicable disease prevention, health accommodations, and return-to-learn/activity planning.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record.
- Review diagnostic reports and ensure appropriate follow-up.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, organizational policies, and HIPAA standards.
- Collaborate with nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams to provide coordinated, student-centered care.
- Partner with counselors, learning specialists, residential life staff, and academic leaders to address student health and wellness needs.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, faculty, and staff while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
- Support the development and implementation of student health, wellness, and preventive care initiatives.
- Participate in quality improvement efforts, policy development, and staff consultation.
- Promote a culture of wellness, resilience, and healthy decision-making across the campus community.
- Participate in campus emergency preparedness, response planning, and public health initiatives.
- Provide medical support during emergencies, crises, and outbreak situations.
Experience and Skills
- Board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), Family Medicine Physician, Pediatrician, or Emergency Medicine Physician.
- Current Michigan licensure (or ability to obtain licensure before employment) and current BLS certification.
- Must meet all State of Michigan requirements for advanced practice licensure and prescriptive authority, to include a collaborative agreement with a physician licensed in the State of Michigan.
- Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in primary care, pediatrics, urgent care, emergency medicine, school health, or a related field.
- Experience caring for pediatric, adolescent, and young adult populations.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and healthcare technology systems.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Experience in a school, college health, boarding school, camp, or residential setting.
- Experience with adolescent health, behavioral health collaboration, wellness programming, and emergency preparedness.
- Ability to provide compassionate, student-centered care.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong relationship-building skills with students, families, faculty, staff, and community providers.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and remain effective during emergencies and high-pressure situations.
