Position Details:

  • 1.0 FTE, 80 Hours Bi-Weekly
  • Generally 8-hour shifts between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm on weekdays. Hours may vary based on staffing needs.
  • May be required to work some weekday holidays. No major holidays.
Position Overview

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) manages referral calls, organizes records, schedules hospice programs, orders supplies, and supports clinical teams. The role involves collaboration across healthcare professionals with a focus on professional customer service.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Process referral calls promptly to meet patient needs.
  • Verify patient insurances and authorizations.
  • Act as the supervisor for the Hospice Pharmacy Benefit Manager and DME programs.
  • Input referral data into the EMR system.
  • Source and order durable medical equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain office and clinical supplies inventory.
  • Organize orientation materials and coordinate onboarding for volunteers and staff.
  • Report ongoing education completion to the Hospice Manager.
  • Support scheduling, forms, and clinical notes with physicians and providers.
  • Coordinate recertification coding with HIM for billing accuracy.
  • Engage regularly with providers and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Arrange appointments and transfer health records as needed.
  • Serve as the first contact for residents, families, and referrals, maintaining professionalism.
  • Maintain an organized office environment and track equipment use.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist nursing with department needs.
  • Support physicians and providers consistently.
  • Complete mandatory training requirements.
Qualifications

Required: Completion of a formal Medical Secretary, HUC, or LPN program.

Preferred: 1-2 years of experience as a Medical Secretary or HUC; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and EMR systems.

Physical Demands & Environment

Light work with occasional lifting up to 20 lbs, pushing/pulling carts, and limited patient mobility assistance. The environment is fast-paced with multitasking and frequent interruptions.

Work Schedule

Typically 8-hour shifts between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm on weekdays, with possible holiday shifts. Hours may vary based on department needs.
