Job summary

MercyOne invites applications for a Health Unit Coordinator to support nursing units with clerical tasks and patient care coordination. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, you will greet, direct and communicate with patients, families and staff while maintaining accurate messages and records.

The role requires 3–4 years of related experience, strong English language skills, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced hospital setting.

Qualifications

  • Mandatory Reporter certification required.
  • 3–4 years' experience in a medical office or hospital.
  • Degree preferred: Medical Secretary, Medical Administrative Secretary, or Medical Assistant.
  • Strong reading, math, and reasoning abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as receptionist and assists in-patient care delivery when appropriate.
  • Answers calls and directs questions to the proper party.
  • Maintains accurate messages and communications with staff.
  • Supports nursing staff when needed and responds to patient calls.
  • Assists patient care delivery under supervision.

Join the MercyOne Family! We are looking to hire a Health Unit Coordinator!

As a Health Unit Coordinator at MercyOne, you will perform clerical duties that support the daily activities of nursing units. Works cooperatively with the nursing staff and other health team members to enhance quality patient care and patient satisfaction. In addition, these incumbents function as Patient Care Assistants. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, works collaboratively with the health care team to provide outcome-based patient care.

Schedule:
  • Full time, 0.8 FTE (32 hours per week)
  • 7:00am - 3:30am with alternating Mondays and Fridays off
  • No weekends or holidays
General Requirements:
  • Acts as receptionist and assists in-patient care delivery when appropriate.
  • Answers telephone calls promptly and politely and answers questions as appropriate.
  • Ensures that accurate messages reach appropriate parties.
  • When nursing staff not available, responds to patient call/emergency lights if possible.
  • Politely greets patients, visitors, physicians and other health team members and directs appropriately.
  • Anticipates needs of physicians, staff, patients and visitors (i.e., pulls charts for rounds, greets people by name when possible).
  • Maintains knowledge of and efficiency utilizes all computer applications of assigned nursing units.
  • Maintains knowledge, skills and ability to effectively work in at least 2 nursing units within one year of hire.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Mandatory Reporter
  • 3-4 years' experience without medical secretary. Prefer 3 years' experience in a medical office/hospital setting.
  • Medical Secretary, Medical Administrative Secretary, or Medical Assistant degree preferred.
  • High language, intermediate math, intermediate reasoning ability.
  • Typing with knowledge of medical terminology; Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Personal computer, mainframe information systems experience preferred, database software.

Requires the ability to read, write and understand the English language, and communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians while performing their job duties.
