Job summary

Allina Health’s United Hospital seeks a part-time Health Unit Coordinator to support patient care coordination in the Emergency Department. The role emphasizes clerical duties, admissions and discharge processing, and timely communication with nursing staff throughout day/evening shifts.

The position requires at least a high school diploma or GED, and preferred Health Unit Coordinator training plus experience with Windows-based software.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in a medical office or hospital setting preferred if not certified as a Health Unit Coordinator.
• Proficient in Windows-based applications and keyboarding.
• Medical terminology knowledge is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs clerical duties: admissions, transfers, discharge and patient registration.
• Communicates patient care needs to nursing staff and supports activities of daily living.
• Processes physician orders accurately and timely.
• Uses resources to ensure correct accommodation codes and patient billing charges are entered.
• Handles filings, mail, email distributions, copying, scanning and faxing per unit protocol.
• Facilitates information exchange with appropriate personnel or outside agencies.
• Enters patient and caregiver information into the Electronic Medical Record system.
• May order, verify, and store supplies and patient education materials.
• Assists with patient chart assembly and organization.
• Answers phone and call lights promptly and routes information to the right staff.
• May print ROI packets for discharge to facilities.
• May check unit keys and cards out to float staff and ensure return.
• Assists with patient registration review and explains authorization forms as needed.
• Directs patients to point of care and schedules procedures/appointments as needed.
• May room patients and assist with telemetry monitoring.
• Supports training of new staff and students.
