Job description

ERM is hiring a Health & Safety Manager in Elkhart, IN. In this critical role, you will be responsible for establishing, implementing, managing and continuously improving the environment, health and safety programs for the facility. The H&S Manager will have broad knowledge of H&S compliance programs and, where required, H&S specialty areas including Industrial Safety, Occupational Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, Risk Management, and Process Safety. This role will provide guidance in managing budgets to support outside services and operating expenses. The role includes strategic H&S planning as well as a tactical role for site-wide H&S systems, H&S regulations, and best practices. This is a full-time (40 hours/week), limited-term role for a duration of 4 months, renewable.

RESPONBILITIES:
  • Topical Responsibilities: Hazardous waste management: Disposal coordination, Compliance audits, Manifest tracking, Permit compliance calendar management, Audiometric exam support (December), PPE administration: Safety shoe program, Safety glasses, Equipment requests, Process Safety Management (PSM) safety and compliance oversight preferred, Daily Risk & Operations Review
  • Key Activities: Attend Tier and production meetings, Review the previous 24 hours of: Incidents, Near misses, Safety observations, Reported hazards, Review significant planned activities, including: Production operations, Maintenance work, Contractor activities, Project work
  • Verify controls are in place for high-risk activities: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Hot Work, Confined Space Entry, Working at Heights, Line Breaking Contractor Work, Prioritize EHS field activities based on risk, Gemba Walks & Field Presence
  • Key Activities: Conduct daily floor walks, Observe work execution and employee behaviors, Verify critical controls are functioning as intended, Engage employees using Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles, Review housekeeping and 5S conditions, Observe contractor work activities, Verify compliance with: PPE requirements, Machine guarding standards, Energy isolation procedures, Identify system weaknesses and improvement opportunities rather than individual blame, Document observations and assign corrective actions
  • Incident & Near Miss Management: Key Activities: Review newly reported events in the EHS Management platform, Injuries, Near misses, Environmental releases, Property damage events, Process safety events, Support incident investigations, Facilitate cause mapping and root cause analysis, Verify containment and corrective actions, Communicate lessons learned, Manage case administration and workers' compensation activities
  • Corrective Action Management: Key Activities: Review overdue corrective actions, Follow up with action owners, Verify effectiveness of completed actions, Escalate overdue or high-risk items, Prioritize actions based on risk ranking, Track actions resulting from: Audits, Inspections, Investigations, Risk assessments
  • Training & Competency Management: Key Activities: Review upcoming training due dates, Monitor compliance rates, Schedule required trainings for New Hires, Periodic/recurring training, Authorized personnel, Conduct toolbox talks and EHS awareness sessions
  • Compliance Assurance Activities: Key Activities: Review permit conditions and monitoring requirements, Verify required inspections are completed, Review environmental sampling results, Maintain regulatory records and documentation, Coordinate regulatory reporting activities, Prepare for agency inspections, Monitor regulatory changes impacting the facility, Conduct compliance spot checks
  • EHS Metrics & Performance Review: Leading Indicators: Safety observations, Near misses, Risk assessments, CAPA closure rates, Training completion rates; Lagging Indicators: Recordable injuries, Lost-time injuries, Environmental incidents
  • Contractor Oversight Key Activities: Review contractor qualifications, Verify permits and work authorizations, Audit contractor work activities, Conduct field observations, Participate in pre-job and pre-task meetings, Review contractor performance concerns and corrective actions
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in safety, occupational health, engineering, or related degree preferred.
  • 5 years relevant experience in H&S within a manufacturing environment.
  • Professional safety certification is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide detailed regulatory interpretation of federal and state OSHA regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.

For the Health & Safety Manager position, the anticipated annual base pay is $X–$Y (USD). Actual pay will depend on factors such as education, experience, skills, location, performance, and business needs. In some cases, pay may fall outside this range. This role may be eligible for bonus pay subject to the sole discretion of ERM and its policies and procedures (casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible).
