Department Information

Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.

Job Summary
  • Manages radiation safety training Program(s) for clinical and research personnel who utilize and/or work in areas where radiation/radioactive materials are present.
  • Plans, establishes, modifies, and evaluates radiation safety policies and procedures.
  • Plans, establishes, and/or evaluates radiation safety aspects of the treatment of patients, provides oversight and consultation to clinicians performing such treatments.
  • Guides and approves research for new radionuclide applications.
  • Manages, performs, and/or evaluates audits of clinical and research departments to ensure compliance with internal procedures as well as state and federal requirements.
  • Evaluates and/or conducts on-site evaluations of new equipment and procedures relating to radiation/radioactive materials and implements appropriate safeguards to ensure compliance with regulations and licensing conditions.
  • Establishes, updates, and implements protocols and procedures to ensure radiation detection devices are calibrated and functioning properly; performs security checks and leak tests for radioactive sources.
  • Establishes, implements, and maintains procedures for the proper handling, processing, and disposal of radioactive waste; provides training to all users of radioactive materials.
  • Manages the personnel monitoring program.
  • Operates the radioactive material receipt and distribution program.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in health physics or related field)

  • 2 years radiation safety, health physics, or related experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

Preferred

  • Certification in Health Physics, Medical Physics, or Radiology and Medical Physics

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
