Position Overview

The Health Information Coder II is a mid-level coder skilled in ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS, and various case types, coding in compliance with official guidelines and UCSF policies. The role involves coding hospital services with minimal review for quality assurance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Retrieve and analyze medical records for accurate documentation and follow-up.
2. Code ambulatory surgery, special procedures, observation, and non-office cases, ensuring compliance with external requirements.
3. Input codes and abstract data into coding databases accurately.
4. Participate in audits and educational sessions, providing feedback and training.
5. Meet departmental standards for productivity and quality.
6. Maintain current knowledge of medical terminology, coding guidelines, and anatomy.
7. Clarify physician documentation as needed.
8. Report to a lead or manager and interact with UCSF staff and customers.
9. Ensure satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
10. Eligibility for sign-on bonus excludes current UC employees and recent rehires, among other criteria.

Salary and Benefits

Range: $57.39 - $71.51 hourly. Additional benefits include health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off. More details at UC Benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma
• Certification: CCS, CIC, CEMC, RHIT, or RHIA
• 3+ years’ experience in relevant coding areas
• Pass knowledge assessment with 90% score
• Maintain 95% accuracy and meet production standards
• Proficiency in EHR and encoder tools
• Knowledge of medical terminology, coding systems, and anatomy
• Intermediate skills in Windows, Word, Excel
• Strong communication and decision-making skills
• Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of HIMS database and procedures
