Job description

Position Overview

Under the direction of the school principal and/or assistant principal, the Health Education Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for all students. Teachers create an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development and develop, select, and differentiate instructional plans and materials based on the HCPSS curriculum.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement instructional programs that adhere to system-wide goals and priorities.
  • Prepare and document lesson plans for classes assigned, based upon HCPSS curricula.
  • Create an instructional environment conducive to student development.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.
  • Establish learning objectives consistent with student needs and the HCPSS curriculum framework.
  • Provide instructional programs to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities, and refer students for specialized support as needed.
  • Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable each student.
  • Provide input when necessary to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Take all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assist administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintain order in a fair and just manner.
  • Communicate standards, achievements, and areas for improvement to students and families; provide timely and meaningful feedback.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and families for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day when required.
  • Plan and oversee purposeful assignments for paraeducators, student assistants, and/or classroom volunteers, and provide non‑evaluative input on their performance when requested.
  • Establish relationships with administrators, curricular office staff, colleagues, students, families, and the school community that reflect recognition and respect for every individual.
  • Maintain effectiveness by appraising one's own performance and applying skills and information to increase effectiveness.
  • Participate in the safe and orderly operation of schools, attend staff meetings, district professional learning events, and serve on staff committees as required.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the HCPSS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position.
  • Ability to provide differentiated instructional techniques that inspire and motivate students.
  • Knowledgeable in effective classroom behavior management strategies.
  • Skillful in preparing and implementing lesson plans and modifying curriculum for special‑needs students.
  • Proficient in communicating with students, families, administrators, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of web‑based digital tools, such as Google applications, and ability to integrate technology into instruction.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, colleagues, central office staff, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable field of education.
  • Meet the Maryland State Department of Education licensure requirements for Health Education Licensure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three previous years of teaching experience.
  • Current Maryland State Department of Education license in Health Education.
Employment Information and Compensation

10‑month per year position in the Howard County Educators Association (HCEA) employee bargaining unit. Salary conforms to the 10‑Month Teacher salary scale, with placement determined by the HCEA Master Agreement and relevant education and experience.
