Statement of Purpose
Performs clinic office duties under the direction of the Clinic Manager or Director of Family Health Services in dealing with patients. For examination and treatment of patients, duties are performed under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (C.M.O.), Physician (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic (D.O.), Nurse Practitioner (N.P.), Physician Assistant (P.A.), or Nurse (R.N.).
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Referrals and follow-up (call patients or send letters when referrals have been approved).
- Keep logs—daily glucose and hemoglobin testing, dispensed medication tracking, labs, cleaning room, refrigerator, monthly oxygen tank, spore testing autoclave.
- Lock up dispensary and clinic areas as needed when leaving in the evening.
- Handle pharmacy refill requests as directed.
- OB patient care—counseling, creating necessary forms, maintaining program books.
- Autoclaving/sterilization of instruments as needed.
- Ordering supplies—check prices, order, keep logs, check in supplies, stock/distribute, remind staff on ordering dates.
- Manage medical records and tests—explain, check for completion, follow up, make appointments, file records, fax records, and review/sign off on records.
- Patient care—take vital signs, medical history, prepare for exams, assist providers, clean rooms after patients.
- Administer vaccines/immunizations, ear lavages, hemoglobin sticks, urinalysis, TB tests, vision and hearing screenings, injections, and other services as directed.
- Lab duties—draw blood, prepare/send specimens, print labs, review with provider, change sharps containers, follow up on lab results.
- Answer phones, check patients in, make calls to maintain patient flow.
- Schedule and confirm appointments, send missed appointment letters.
- Translate for doctors/patients as needed.
- Stock and restock supplies, ensure availability.
- Distribute paperwork, make copies, contact doctors’ offices for records.
- Maintain, order, and update charts.
- Manage dispensary—open/close, ensure compliance, check expiration dates, log medications.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Understand referrals within and outside the BHS system.
- Communicate clearly with clients, staff, and external resources.
Prerequisite Qualifications
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred in some programs.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid California driver’s license and liability insurance if driving on BHS business.
- Good vision, hearing, manual dexterity, and coordination.
Qualifications
- Certification as a Medical Assistant.
- Phlebotomy certification.
- CPR certification (and current).
- TB clearance.
- Class “B” or “C” California Driver’s License.
- Personal vehicle with liability insurance for reimbursable mileage.
- Bi-lingual skills (specify: ___________________).
- At least one year of experience in a medical office or ambulatory care setting.
- Develop computer skills to perform EMR duties within 90 days.
