Job summary

Manor Hill Elementary School is seeking a Health Assistant to support the health services team. The 10-month position follows the student calendar, with duties including health screenings, documentation, and basic first-aid under supervision of the school nurse and principal.

Starting hourly wages are $15.00, with LPNs at $16.00 per hour. Requires First Aid and CPR certifications, plus typing skills; vision/hearing screening certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • Certified for vision and hearing screening preferred.
  • Thirty hours of college coursework, preferably health-related, is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the nurse and health staff in daily health office operations.
  • Record health data and maintain student health records.
  • Administer medications as instructed by the nurse.
  • Conduct routine health screenings as directed by the nurse.
  • Coordinate with school nurse and principal on student health concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student health information.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS:
  • 1. Listening and speaking skills
  • 2. Moving and lifting of materials, supplies, etc.
  • 3. Operating office equipment
  • 4. Reaching high and low shelves and/or files
  • 5. Visually observing student behavior
  • 6. Work as a member of a health services team in cooperation with the school nurse and building principal
REPORTS TO:

Building principal and certified school nurse

SUPERVISES:

N/A

JOB GOAL:

To assist the building principal and the school nurse in conducting the school health program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • 1. Checks children with complaints:
    • Takes temperatures.
    • Observes conditions.
    • Contacts parent and/or nurse as appropriate.
  • 2. Reports by telephone serious accidents or unusual symptoms to the nurse and seeks direction as necessary.
  • 3. Receives, monitors or makes phone calls related to student absences.
  • 4. Carries out first-aid as per recommended procedures. Remains with the student until he/she leaves the building if at the end of the school day.
  • 5. Keeps a record of all children seen and care given.
  • 6. Prepares and distributes required school accident reports.
  • 7. Assists nurse in preparing materials and forms and carrying out special health programs.
  • 8. Assists nurse in identification of health concerns.
  • 9. Transcribes health data onto individual pupil cumulative health records.
  • 10. Assists nurse in collecting and recording health office statistics.
  • 11. Begins new Health Records and Cumulative Record Sheets for all pupils new to the school.
  • 12. Discusses activities, observations, and findings regularly with the school nurse.
  • 13. Keeps current files and health records.
  • 14. Follows up on delinquent physical, dental, vision, and hearing examinations and incomplete immunization information as directed by the school nurse.
  • 15. Assists in vision and hearing screening programs as directed by the school nurse.
  • 16. Types student health-related materials.
  • 17. Performs health procedures as instructed by parents and Certified School Nurse.
Procedures may include but are not limited to:
  • Use of Epi-Pens.
  • 18. Respects the strict confidential nature of the position.
  • 19. Administers medication as instructed by Certified RN and as outlined in medication policy.
  • 20. Reports to DuPage County Health Department and documents communicable diseases.
  • 21. Performs head lice checks.
  • 22. Maintains health office inventory.
  • 23. Performs duties and assignments to assist the school office as needed and other related duties as assigned by the principal.
**SCHOOL OFFICE HEALTH ASSISTANT MAY NOT:**

Offer diagnosis or medical opinions of any sort to pupils, parents, or District 44 personnel.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment determined by school calendar with compensation as established by the Board of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance is evaluated by the school principal in consultation with the school nurse.
