Job summary

Maryland Rural Development Corporation seeks a Head Start Teacher Assistant to support the Lead Teacher in a developmentally appropriate preschool setting. You will assist with lesson planning, classroom activities, and daily routines while promoting school readiness and social-emotional growth.

The position is an eleven-month, full-time role with a salary range of $19.15–$20.47 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive to MRDC locations throughout the state.
• Must pass criminal background check and fingerprinting.
• Must pass Maryland licensing requirements including medical evaluation and TB screening.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Head Start Teacher in planning and implementing lesson plans aligned with Head Start guidelines.
• Engage with children in developmentally appropriate activities (play, reading, hands-on experiences).
• Observe and assess children's development and input for individualized learning plans.
• Encourage positive social-emotional behaviors and problem-solving skills.
• Supervise children to ensure a safe and nurturing environment.
• Assist with classroom organization and maintaining a clean space.
• Support children during meals, naptime, and transitions.
• Follow Head Start health and safety policies (hygiene and sanitation).
• Develop relationships with families and communicate progress regularly.
• Encourage parental involvement in classroom activities and events.
• Assist in preparing materials for parent meetings and conferences.
• Work with teacher, staff, and administrators; attend required trainings.
