The Pennsylvania State University’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) seeks a Department Head for the Fluids Machinery Department within the Fluid Mechanics Division in State College, PA. The role leads turbomachinery design, analysis, and testing for DoD and industry partners.

The position emphasizes mentorship, business development, and technical leadership across proposals, sponsorships, and external collaborations; travel to remote locations is required.

Qualifications

• Requires leadership of technical personnel and sponsored programs.
• Experience leading turbomachinery, fluid dynamics, or cavitation projects.
• Strong presentation and communication skills.
• Experience in wind or water facility experiments.
• Security clearance at Secret level or higher.
• Ability to develop proposals and manage budgets.

Responsabilités

• Provide organizational leadership to a growing group of engineers, including recruitment, development, retention, and technical direction.
• Direct technical excellence, cost control and on-time delivery of work.
• Lead technical execution of research, design, development and testing of turbomachinery systems for government and industry customers.
• Provide subject matter expertise in turbomachinery, fluid dynamics and cavitation.
• Develop and maintain sponsor relationships and manage external collaborations.
• Oversee proposal development and funding opportunities; ensure compliance and reporting.
• Ensure safety, security, and export control requirements across teams.
