Head of Risk – Electronic & Algorithmic Trading

An elite global financial institution is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Risk – Electronic & Algorithmic Trading to lead the risk oversight function for its electronic and algorithmic trading activities across equities and related products. This critical leadership role is responsible for designing and implementing robust risk frameworks that ensure the integrity, compliance, and resilience of the firm’s electronic trading platforms and strategies.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in electronic trading infrastructure, first-line or second-line risk management, regulatory engagement, and strategic business partnership across front office, technology, and compliance functions.

Key Responsibilities:

Electronic Trading Risk Oversight

• Lead the design and execution of the electronic and algorithmic trading risk framework across asset classes.
• Develop and maintain real-time monitoring capabilities to detect anomalies in trading behavior and system performance.
• Proactively identify and mitigate operational, market, and technology risks inherent in electronic trading activities.
• Provide risk oversight for electronic trading technology changes, enhancements, and deployments.
• Partner with technology and trading teams to ensure control frameworks are embedded into all phases of the system development lifecycle.
• Offer subject matter expertise to mitigate risks stemming from system upgrades, code releases, and infrastructure changes.
• Design and manage incident response protocols related to electronic trading outages, market disruptions, and internal control breaches.
• Conduct scenario-based risk assessments, evaluating systems and strategies under stressed market conditions.
• Track and oversee the implementation of remedial actions to address identified risks or failures.

Strategic Advisory & New Business Risk

• Evaluate and approve new algorithmic trading strategies, models, and electronic trading initiatives from a risk perspective.
• Partner with front-office leadership on business expansions while maintaining strong risk discipline and governance.
• Lead risk reviews of new product launches and changes in market access models.

Governance, Reporting & Documentation

• Ensure the electronic trading risk management program is well-documented, auditable, and aligned with regulatory expectations.
• Prepare periodic reporting packages for executive leadership, risk committees, and regulatory bodies.
• Monitor the effectiveness of controls through regular testing, reviews, and audits.

Regulatory & Compliance Engagement

• Serve as the primary risk liaison on all electronic trading-related regulatory inquiries, audits, and industry consultations.
• Maintain current knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and ensure the firm’s policies, limits, and practices remain compliant.
• Collaborate with Compliance on control attestations, risk limit setting, and regulatory change impact assessments.
