Job summary

AbbVie seeks an accomplished scientific and organizational leader to serve as Head of Molecular Discovery Technologies (MDT). This role defines strategic direction for DEL, protein NMR, MS-based screening and structural characterization, and emerging discovery technologies to accelerate hit discovery across therapeutic areas.

The leader reports to the Head of Target Enabling Technologies and sits on the extended leadership team for Small Molecule Therapeutics and Platform Technologies, driving

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of industry experience in lead discovery and/or molecular discovery technologies.
• Strong background in medicinal chemistry and lead discovery strategy.
• Demonstrated success leading scientific functions or platform teams in a matrixed research environment.
• Recognized scientific leader with publications, invited presentations, or patents.
• Experience applying AI/ML or advanced analytics to discovery data preferred.
• Excellent leadership, communication, influencing, and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership: Define and execute MDT strategy to maximize portfolio impact and improve hit quality.
• Lead MDT portfolio prioritization, resource allocation, and cross-functional investments.
• Drive integrated data strategies linking experimental, screening, and computational insights with AI/ML.
• Partner with leaders across domains to shape future lead-discovery approaches and investments.
• Develop long-range MDT technology, talent, and infrastructure plans aligned with portfolio needs.
• Establish metrics for platform performance and organizational effectiveness.
