Job summary

TPI Composites Inc. seeks a Director of Innovation to lead the technology development function for composite wind blade design, materials, and manufacturing.

This role owns the full technology pipeline—from concept through TRL 8/9 and MRL 6 production readiness—while building and guiding a team of engineers and technologists to deliver measurable production impact. You will set the technology roadmap, collaborate with engineering, operations, quality, and program management, and drive AI/ML

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level degree in a technical field; advanced degree preferred.
• 10–15 years in technology/product development or advanced manufacturing engineering; leadership experience.
• Experience maturing technologies through TRL/MRL processes; concept to production.
• Hands-on AI/ML experience applied to engineering/ manufacturing problems.
• Strong background in composites, materials science, or advanced manufacturing; wind energy preferred.
• Ability to scout, assess, and integrate third-party technologies into production.

Responsibilities

• Lead team for development of new and low-TRL technologies across materials, processes, tooling, and automation.
• Own technology maturation from concept through TRL 8/9 and MRL 6 with stage-gate governance.
• Evaluate and vet existing technologies for applicability to production; lead build-vs-buy-vs-partner assessments.
• Establish and maintain a technology roadmap aligned with business strategy and manufacturing needs.
• Champion AI/ML applications to accelerate development, modeling, and decision-making.
• Direct experimental design, testing, characterization, and modeling to validate new tech before production release.
• Partner with manufacturing, engineering, operations, and program management for technology transitions into serial production.
• Manage budgets, timelines, resourcing, and external partnerships; build IP portfolio and document decisions.
• Develop business cases, ROI models, and budgets for tech investments to senior leadership.
• Mentor engineering staff and grow organizational capability in technology development and composites manufacturing.
