Job summary

Sylvania Schools in Ohio is seeking a Mechanic Helper to assist in maintaining and repairing the district's transportation fleet.

The role requires a CDL, diesel engine experience, and knowledge of shop equipment. You will perform low-level repairs, assist with towing, and help prepare vehicles for inspections.

Hours are 6:00AM–2:30PM, 12-month calendar, reports to Lead Mechanic, and requires clean background checks.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent is required.
• Must have a CDL License or be willing to obtain one.
• Two years of verified work experience or a two-year technical school degree.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Knowledge of vehicle servicing principles and ability to detect defects.

Responsibilities

• Understand, service and perform low level repairs on the district’s bus fleet and support vehicles.
• Perform emergency repairs.
• Assist in towing and recovering vehicles as necessary.
• Power washing buses for annual inspection.
• Assist in maintenance and repair for annual spot inspections by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
• Attend job related in-service training courses.
• Function as a substitute bus driver as required.
• Secure repair parts from suppliers.
• Enter absences and clock in/out via the Red Rover System, and to communicate same-day absences to the Director of Transportation and Human Capital.
• Check district email regularly, and communicate as needed via email.
• Perform other duties consistent with the function of the job or as assigned by the Transportation Director.

Job description

POSITION: Mechanic Helper

LOCATION: Support Services Facility - Transportation Department

HOURS: 6:00AM – 2:30PM (8 hours per day with ½ lunch)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Month According to School Calendar

REPORTS TO: Lead Mechanic / Director of Transportation

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Assist in maintaining and repairing the district’s transportation fleet and support vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated record of successful employment.
3. Must have a CDL License or willing to obtain one.
4. Documented mechanic experience in a Class B (preferred) recognized shop working on appropriate vehicles. Two years verified work experience or a Two Year verified Technical School Degree.
5. CDL License required.
6. Must successfully pass a physical assessment including a material handling lift test up to 75 pounds.
7. Meet the Sylvania Schools vehicle insurance criteria, and maintain the same.
8. Appropriate BCII and FBI background checks required.
9. Must possess communication skills both written and verbal to perform tasks.
10. Must have working knowledge of computer and software programs.
11. Must have appropriate knowledge and experience on vehicle servicing principals and practices including knowledge of shop equipment and tools, ability to detect vehicle defects and malfunctions and perform the appropriate low-level repairs and/or report the noted defects.
12. Diesel engine experience preferred.
13. Must be insurable by board insurance carrier.
14. Must complete all training as required by Sylvania Schools and/or the Ohio Department of Education.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
