Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and oversee preventive maintenance for buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems.
  • Inspect facilities, estimate materials/labor/time, and prioritize repairs.
  • Assign, schedule, and supervise maintenance personnel; monitor quality and timeliness.
  • Coordinate approved contractor work; manage scheduling and access.
  • Oversee routine and emergency repairs; respond to urgent facility needs.
  • Order materials and supplies; recommend equipment purchases.
  • Maintain maintenance records, work orders, and related billing docs.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of maintenance staff.
  • Ensure work is performed per safety practices and regulations.
  • Communicate priorities and progress to administrators and staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

About the Job

The Head Maintenance Worker provides direct supervision and coordination of maintenance operations across assigned Questar III BOCES facilities. This position oversees preventive maintenance, repairs, maintenance personnel, and approved contractor work to ensure buildings, grounds, and equipment remain safe, functional, and available for educational use.

The Head Maintenance Worker supports timely completion of maintenance requests, protects facilities and equipment, and minimizes disruptions to instructional programs and services through effective planning, daily oversight, and accountability

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, schedule, and oversee preventive maintenance for assigned buildings, grounds, equipment, and building systems.

  • Inspect facilities to identify maintenance needs; estimate the materials, labor, and time required; and prioritize repairs based on safety, urgency, and operational needs.

  • Assign, schedule, and supervise maintenance personnel, providing clear direction and monitoring work quality and timely completion.

  • Coordinate approved contractor work, including scheduling, facility access, and review of completed work.

  • Oversee routine and emergency repairs and respond to urgent facility needs to support safe operations and minimize service disruptions.

  • Order necessary materials and supplies and recommend equipment purchases to support maintenance operations.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, reports, and related billing documentation.

  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, and training of maintenance staff, including instruction in safe work practices and proper equipment use.

  • Monitor maintenance activities to ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable safety practices, regulatory requirements, and Questar III BOCES procedures.

  • Communicate maintenance priorities, work progress, and facility concerns to appropriate administrators and staff.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by administration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance, preventive maintenance practices, repair procedures, and the safe use of tools and equipment.

  • Ability to plan and prioritize work, coordinate multiple maintenance requests, and respond effectively to emergencies.

  • Ability to supervise, train, and provide direction to maintenance personnel.

  • Ability to estimate repair needs, maintain accurate records, and coordinate materials and supplies.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, administrators, and contractors.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and at least two (2) years of training and experience in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades.
