Job summary

YMCA of San Diego County is seeking a Head Lifeguard to maintain a safe aquatic environment under the supervision of the Aquatics Director/Coordinator. Responsibilities include staff supervision in their absence, facility operations, and delivering excellent customer service to members and participants.

The role is part-time, requires at least 3 shifts per week (4-hour shifts) with weekend openings/closures, and demands certification in lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED, and O2, plus a CPO within

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 18 years old.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience as a lifeguard.
• Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (must crossover to YMCA in 6 months).
• Current First Aid for Public Safety Personnel and must be from one of: ARC, AHA or ASHI.
• Current CPR PRO/AED and must be from ARC, AHA or ASHI.
• Current O2 certification from ARC/AHA/ASHI.
• CPO certification within 60 days of employment.
• Experience supervising staff preferred.

Responsibilities

• Practice preventive lifeguard techniques at all times: full view of area, 180-degree coverage, scan every 5–10 seconds.
• Perform appropriate rescues.
• Administer First Aid, CPR, AED or O2 as necessary.
• Report hazards and incidents to Aquatic Director/Coordinator when immediate actions aren’t possible.
• Inform Aquatics Director/Coordinator when pool unsafe or mechanical problems arise.
• Supervise Aquatic Staff in absence of Aquatic Director/Coordinator to enforce policies.
• Monitor pump room operations: chemical levels, water clarity, chlorine/acid levels.
• Interact professionally with members and participants; treat them fairly.
• Resolve problems with members or escalate to leadership when needed.
• Must pass written and practical skills prior to duty.
