Job summary

Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD) in Lenexa, KS seeks enthusiastic lifeguards to ensure patron safety at Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center and surrounding beaches. You will lead lifeguard staff, oversee shifts, enforce rules, and maintain a clean, safe facility.

Role includes training lifeguards in water rescue, CPR/First Aid, delivering quality customer service, completing daily paperwork, and participating in in-service trainings.

Qualifications

• American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification with Waterfront and First Aid, CPR & AED required.
• Minimum age 16 years or older.
• Experience in peer management/supervision or ability to demonstrate related skills.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Maintain good physical condition and safety awareness.

Responsibilities

• Ensure patron safety by preventing and responding to emergencies, overseeing lifeguards and staff at the Aquatic Center and outdoor beaches.
• Supervise lifeguard staff during shifts, rotations, facility cleaning, chemical use, and daily checklists.
• Assist in training lifeguards in water rescues, CPR/First Aid techniques.
• Observe and enforce facility rules to prevent accidents or emergencies.
• Educate patrons about facility rules and maintain surveillance; respond to emergencies and provide first aid.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary facility and complete daily paperwork.
• Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings; maintain physical condition and job-related skills.

Job Description

• Ensures the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies,providing leadership to lifeguards and other facility staff at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center as well as the outdoor beaches located at Shawnee Mission Park and/or Kill Creek Park.
• Supervise lifeguard staff during scheduled shifts including lifeguard rotations, cleaning the facility, use of appropriate chemicals, training of facility staff and ensure daily facility checklists are completed.
• Assist in the training of lifeguard staff in proper water rescues and CPR/First Aid techniques.
• Observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility to prevent accidents or emergency situations.
• Educate and inform patrons of the rules and regulations of the facility.
• Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; respond quickly to all emergencies and administer first aid as needed.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary facility.
• Communicate with the lifeguard team and facility staff for additional assistance in an emergency.
• Provide quality customer service for our patrons.
• Complete and submit all appropriate daily paperwork during assigned shifts.
• Attend all in-service training sessions and staff meetings as scheduled.
• Maintain good physical condition and strong job-related skills.
• Perform all other relatedas assigned.

Job Requirements

• Minimum age is 16 years and older.
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification with Waterfront and First Aid, CPR & AED Certification required.
• Previous experience in peer management/supervision or ability to demonstrate related skills set.
• Strong communication and customer service skills along with the ability to work with individuals of all ages.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain good physical condition and maintain professional skills of safety, alertness, responsibility, initiative, good judgment and cleanliness.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

• This work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching.
• The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The employee distinguishes between shades of color.
• Employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and hot, cold or inclement weather.
• The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
