IMMEDIATE OPENINGS! Campus Recreation is seeking Head Lifeguards to assist with reopening our facilities and programs.
Campus Recreation, part of Student Affairs, offers fitness, wellness, and recreational programs across various facilities including the Intramural Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, and Intramural Sports.
Head Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring patron safety through surveillance and preventive lifeguarding, acting as shift supervisors, and upholding department standards. They must maintain knowledge of lifeguarding skills per the American Red Cross and Penn State policies, lead training sessions, and assist in maintaining a safe, clean aquatic environment. They are expected to manage conflicts respectfully, arrive punctually, stay calm in emergencies, communicate regularly with supervisors, and interact positively with diverse groups.
They are also encouraged to pursue ongoing professional growth, attend trainings, give and receive feedback, and work effectively as part of the team. Certification requirements include American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, Penn State Bloodborne Pathogens training, and background checks (criminal and FBI) before their first shift. Work hours are limited to 24 hours/week during the academic year (20 hours for international students) and up to 40 hours/week during breaks, primarily at the White Building or McCoy Natatorium.
The position requires flexibility for mornings, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
