Position Summary
The City of McMinnville is in search of a Head Lifeguard for the McMinnville Aquatic Center. This position is flexible up to 19 hours per week.

Duties include a combination of lifeguard, swim instructor, cashier, and fitness instructor with the added responsibility of limited supervision of on duty lifeguards and aquatic center facilities. Take charge in an emergency and handle issues with patrons when pool management is not in the building. At the direction of pool management, assist in training lifeguards and teach Lifeguard Training Classes.
Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Lead on-duty lifeguards and aquatic facility
- Act as lead when the Manager, Supervisor or Coordinator are not in the building.
- Coordinate breaks for on-duty lifeguards.
- Coordinate rotations of lifeguards.
- Assign tasks to lifeguards when not on pool surveillance.
- Oversee emergency situations.
- Assist patrons with a variety of needs.
- Add chemicals to the pool when needed.
- Hand test the pool levels.
- Check pool equipment to ensure it is in working order.
- Assist and mentor guards.
Lifeguarding surveillance and duties
- Watch patrons using pools and weight room to ensure they are safe in and around the pools.
- Perform preventative lifeguarding by educating patrons on behaviors before they become more serious.
- Perform emergency rescues.
Office and cashier duties
- Greet customers and answer patron questions.
- Sell admissions, lessons, and memberships.
- Answer phone calls and emails from patrons.
- Perform data entry, sign making, and other miscellaneous office tasks.
- Assist and mentor customer service reps.
Instruct Swimming Lessons
- Test and divide swim session participants into sub-classes.
- Teach a variety of classes from parent-child class to advanced lessons.
- Complete appropriate paperwork related to attendance and student skill sheets.
- Assist and mentor other swim instructors, as directed by manager or supervisor.
Instruct Fitness Classes
- Instruct Aquatic Fitness Classes
- Substitute teach, as needed.
- Welcome participants, answer questions, monitor class for safety.
General Job Functions
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
- Participate in committees when requested.
- Maintain proficiency in job requirements which may include attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility, which may require travel.
- Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
- Maintain confidentiality, data integrity, and comply with all related city, state, and federal standards related to confidentiality.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Of
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described. A typical way to qualify would be a high school degree and at least six (6) months of related experience. This position also requires:
- Lifeguard skills and techniques
- Customer service skills
- Basic fitness concepts
- Fitness classes offered at the pool

- Ability to become a Lifeguard Training Instructor
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions
The position requires minimal (20-40%) ability to use dexterity and fine motor skills assemble, build or repair machines or other objects. Occasional (21-50% of the time) use of office equipment. The position requires some (20-40%) physical effort such as lifting, carrying, or movement, etc. Movements required to complete work require continual speed, agility, hand eye coordination and equipment operation. The work environment has regular hazards or obstacles (40-60%). There may be some personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are somewhat uncomfortable, with moderate (40-60%) issues of confinement, temperature change, incident of noise, or interactions of a disagreeable nature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, exposure to contagious disease, etc. Position may require regular responsibility for driving.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Responsible for lead duties and may provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel and may assign work to student workers.
Supervision Received
Works under the general direction of the Aquatics Recreation Supervisor.
