Description

Terms of Employment: 12 (twelve) months

Full-time Hours/days: 6:00am - 2:30pm, Monday through Friday, 40 hrs/week. Hours may vary daily depending on tasks.

Education: High school diploma or high school equivalency.

Qualifications: Supervisory and training skills; knowledge of maintenance procedures: housekeeping, floor care, minor repairs, and troubleshooting; human relations skills; ability to lift sixty (60) pounds.

Job Goal: The job of Head Custodian, Elementary, is done for the purpose/s of providing custodial services at assigned site; ensuring an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; performing a variety of special cleaning operations; overseeing the preparation of facilities for classroom activities and campus events; overseeing and supporting assigned custodians in the performance of their assignments; and ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinates with district personnel for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and/or programs.
  • Facilitates meetings for the purpose of identifying appropriate actions, developing recommendations, supporting other staff, and serving as a District representative.
  • Inspects custodial work for the purpose of ensuring site safety, maintaining cleaning standards, organizing and scheduling needed maintenance.
  • Maintains custodial equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Manages a preventive maintenance program (e.g. site activities and equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring organizational objectives are achieved in the most efficient and timely manner.
  • Monitors fund balances of assigned programs and related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, related revenues are generated, expenses within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Monitors building security and acts directly in the reporting of incidents for the purpose of documenting pertinent information and limiting loss and/or liability.
  • Oversees workload of department for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force and meeting operational requirements.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and gathering information regarding a wide variety of subjects required to carry out their administrative responsibilities.
  • Prepares a variety of materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, procedures, manuals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Procures maintenance equipment and materials for the purpose of recommending and assisting in the selection of supplies and equipment to be stocked in the district warehouse for use by custodial staff and for general custodial purposes.
  • Recommends plans, specifications and cost estimates for the purpose of implementing repairs and improvement projects.
  • Responds to emergencies for the purpose of determining and implementing appropriate actions required to resolve situation.
  • Responds to a variety of inquiries for the purpose of identifying the relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue including emergency repairs.
  • Supervises department functions including hiring/termination recommendations, planning / scheduling /coordinating activities, training, advising, consulting, etc. for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Trains custodians for the purpose of ensuring proper cleaning and building maintenance techniques, injury prevention and legal compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance; operating appropriate software programs; adhering to safety practices; scheduling for necessary processes and procedures; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of industrial cleaning including floor and carpet; basic tools for minor repairs; and safety practices and procedures.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate to significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; problem solving; working with frequent interruptions; working with diverse populations; and meeting deadlines and schedules.

Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand. Lift sixty (60) lbs. occasionally, with the ability to reach, stand, walk, carry, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, and/or crawl. Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties; Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
