Job summary

Stanford University’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Mechanical Engineer to lead the Beam Delivery Systems Engineering Department. The role oversees design, integration, and operation of X-ray beam delivery systems, with responsibilities spanning budgeting, scheduling, and staff development.

You will manage a team of engineers and collaborate with scientists and fabrication facilities to deliver high-performance X-ray optics and diagnostics.

Qualifications

• Eight+ years of experience with design and operation of beam delivery systems.
• Leadership, interpersonal, organizational and supervisory skills.
• Experience with engineering tools such as Solid Edge, ANSYS and MATLAB.
• Ability to build productive relationships across LCLS and SLAC.
• Excellent communication, facilitation and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Manufacturing, assembly and installation coordination of complex systems.
• Sound engineering judgement and independent problem solving.
• Experience working in a diverse team environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide engineering leadership for new initiatives advancing X-ray instrumentation and beamline diagnostics.
• Lead integration and testing of systems with staff scientists, facilities, and technicians.
• Manage technical scope within budget and schedule with QA processes.
• Possibly function as a Cost Account Manager in project roles.
• Ensure adherence to Conduct of Engineering and proper documentation.
• Provide department leadership for system development and operation transfer.
• Conduct performance management and contribute to salary ranking.
• Influence strategic technical decisions by LCLS senior management.
• Contribute to defining complex engineering solutions for X-ray experiments.
• Perform duties with significant scheduling and budgeting responsibility.
