Job summary

Stanford University’s Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) seeks a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the development and operation of advanced scientific instruments and beamline systems at SLAC. You will join the mechanical engineering team and help drive new X-ray and laser capabilities, ensuring robust designs and reliable performance.

The role requires designing, testing, and integrating complex systems, managing quality and schedule, and collaborating with staff scientists and fabrication

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related field with at least four years of relevant experience.
  • Experience designing, fabricating, assembling and testing complex scientific instrumentation.
  • Performing engineering calculations, numerical analysis and materials evaluation for device fabrication and testing.
  • Vibration and thermal isolation of precision X-ray and optical components.
  • Preparing detailed mechanical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical engineering support and leadership for new initiatives advancing X-ray experimental capabilities and beamline diagnostics.
  • Lead integration and testing of systems with staff scientists and technicians.
  • Ensure execution and delivery of technical scope within budget and schedule with QA.
  • May serve as Cost Account Manager in project roles.
