Job summary

Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Staff Engineer 4 in Mechanical Design to lead advanced mechanical systems for SSRL beamlines. You will drive concept generation, modeling in 3D CAD, material selection, tolerancing, and vendor coordination to deliver precise, vacuum-compatible assemblies.

The role requires 8+ years in CAD-based design, full project lifecycles, and expertise in precision engineering and ANSI documentation.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with 8+ years of CAD-based design experience.
Led full-lifecycle projects from design to installation and commissioning.
Subject matter expert in precision engineering, kinematic principles, fabrication, and ANSI documentation.
Combines analytical problem-solving with innovative design concept.
Proficient in using FEA to address thermal, thermal stress, and structural problems.
Able to communicate technical information to physicists, engineers, and technicians.

Responsibilities

Lead design of advanced mechanical systems and facilities for SSRL beamlines.
Oversee component design, modeling, drawings, vendor coordination, and technical docs.
Manage engineering process from concept through field installation with scientists and technicians.
Act as project manager for complex components or facilities building.
Support assembly of a high-caliber engineering team for SSRL user community.
