Hazardous Materials Technician I – (T237301)

Description

The primary accountabilities below describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not an exhaustive statement of duties.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Hazardous Materials Manager, responsible for collection, transportation, and delivery of hazardous materials to and from research and clinical laboratories in a safe manner. Completes transfer records, segregates radioactive materials, performs measurements, and documents surveys.

Maintains Universal Waste Accumulation Areas, inspects, handles, collects, transports, and stores waste. Delivers chemicals and packages daily. Handles and transports radiological, universal, and chemical hazardous waste. Responds to hazardous chemical/radiological spills and performs critical customer service duties.

Essential Accountabilities

• Perform all duties concerning universal, hazardous chemical, and/or radiological material removal, transport, delivery, inspection, labeling, and storage; separate hazardous waste and escort vendors to waste sites.
• Clean up chemical spills using containment supplies and tools, maintain clean storage and hazardous waste areas.
• Load and unload materials onto trucks using hand‑trucks, hoists, or forklifts; perform shredding and recycling program duties.
• Comply with local, state, and federal rules regarding safe collection, transportation, and storage of hazardous material; enter data into hazardous waste tracking systems.
• Respond to after‑hours calls, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and inclement weather; work overtime and emergency on‑call rotation; report issues to manager.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Starting Hourly Rate of Pay

$16.00 – $22.76 per hour, commensurate with experience & qualifications.

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (subject to change).

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience.
• Successful completion of Universal, Hazardous, Biological, and Radiation Safety courses within six months of employment.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations

Valid U.S. driver’s license, at least 21 years of age, minimum three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

• Knowledge of hazardous waste packing requirements, including DOT and disposal site packing requirements.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations for hazardous chemicals, universal, and radiological waste management, transportation, and disposal.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to select, use, and maintain specialized PPE, and determine appropriate methods for job assignments.
• Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods.
• Interpersonal skills with all levels of customers and external stakeholders.
• Knowledge of computer systems, tools, and programs.
• Ability to work under limited supervision and follow written instructions and policies.

Physical/Personal Requirements

Capable of performing tasks requiring sitting, staring at a screen, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting 20–50 pounds, and extensive walking.
