Job summary

UAB is seeking a Hazardous Materials Technician I to join its Environmental Health & Safety team. Under direct supervision, you will collect, transport, and deliver hazardous materials to and from research and clinical laboratories, ensuring safe handling and documentation.

Responsibilities include segregating radioactive from non-radioactive materials, performing radiation surveys, maintaining universal waste areas, responding to spills, and complying with local, state, and federal regulations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of Universal, Hazardous, Biological, and Radiation Safety courses within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Performs universal, hazardous chemical, and radiological material removal, transport, delivery, inspection, labeling, and storage.
• Cleans up chemical spills and maintains clean storage and work areas.
• Loads/unloads materials using manual handling equipment and transports, including shredding and recycling duties.
• Complies with Local, State, and Federal regulations for hazardous material handling and safety practices; enters data into waste tracking systems.
• Responds to after-hours calls, works overtime, and participates in on-call rotations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
