Job summary

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is seeking a Hazardous Material Investigator Specialist 2 for the Transportation Department's Motor Carrier Enforcement unit. The role offers an hourly rate of $34.53 and entails conducting complex material transporter inspections, compliance reviews, audits, and investigations of motor carriers in Ohio.

On-site work with flexible start times to support safety outcomes.

Qualifications

• 48 months training or experience in commercial transportation safety practices and procedures
• 12 months training or experience in hazardous materials regulation compliance/enforcement
• Valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

• Conduct and evaluate complex hazardous material transporter inspections
• Conduct unannounced compliance reviews, shipper reviews and investigations of motor carriers
• Complete New Entrant Safety Audits of new Motor Carriers
• Conduct surveillance of carrier operations
• Respond to hazardous material incidents
• Prepare reports on inspections, investigations, educational training, and other related data
• Interview carriers, shippers, and drivers for in-depth investigation of complex cases
• Interact with other agencies including FMCSA, PHMSA, EPA, Ohio State Highway Patrol, local law enforcement, and fire departments
• Comprehensive Investigation of commercial vehicle crashes, spills, or release of hazardous materials
• Attend in-service, continuing education and training sessions required for the job classification
• Representing the PUCO at outreach and education programs for industry and the general public

This is accomplished through reduction and prevention of crashes involving commercial motor vehicles, reduction and prevention of hazardous materials incidents, development of consumer protection regulations, and resolution of consumer and carrier complaints.

EMPLOYEES MUST LIVE WTHIN 30 AIR MILES OF 225 E. WASHINGTON ST. MEDINA, OH 44256

PUCO core hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm, however, daily start/end times may vary based on operational need across PUCO departments. Most positions perform work on-site at the PUCO Central Office. The PUCO offers flextime work schedules that allow an employee to start the day as early as 6:00am or as late as 10:30am. Flex-time schedules are based on operational need and require supervisor approval.

Salary Information: Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary is set at the lowest rate of the salary range. In most cases, successful employees will increase a step in the salary range within six months, with subsequent step increases occurring every year. In addition, the State of Ohio offers cost of living adjustments, longevity supplements after five years of public service, and wellness incentives.
