Job summary

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is seeking a Hazardous Materials Investigation Specialist 2 in Medina. This full-time role conducts complex hazmat inspections, reviews, and investigations, coordinating with FMCSA, PHMSA, EPA and local agencies to ensure compliance and safety.

You will interview shippers and drivers, prepare detailed reports, and participate in ongoing training while living within 30 miles of Medina, OH.

Qualifications

• 48 months of training or experience in commercial transportation safety practices and procedures.
• 12 months of training or experience in hazardous materials regulation compliance/enforcement.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Or 24 months as Hazardous Materials Investigation Specialist 1, 23161.
• Or equivalent of minimum qualifications for employment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and evaluate complex hazardous material transporter inspections.
• Conduct unannounced compliance reviews, shipper reviews and investigations of motor carriers.
• Complete New Entrant Safety Audits of new Motor Carriers.
• Conduct surveillance of carrier operations.
• Respond to hazardous material incidents.
• Prepare reports on inspections, investigations, educational training, and related data.
• Interview carriers, shippers, and drivers for in-depth investigation of complex cases.
• Interact with FMCSA, PHMSA, EPA, Ohio State Highway Patrol, local law enforcement, and fire departments.
• Comprehensive investigation of commercial vehicle crashes, spills, or release of hazardous materials.
• Attend in-service, continuing education and training sessions required for the job classification.
• Represent PUCO at outreach and education programs for industry and the public.

Hourly Rate: $34.53

About the Transportation Department:

The Transportation Department’s mission is to facilitate safe and secure commercial transportation on public highways, railroads, and transportation facilities, as well as to promote quality and equitable service in a proactive manner for the public and commercial carriers in the household goods, bus and ferry boat industries. This is accomplished through reduction and prevention of crashes involving commercial motor vehicles, reduction and prevention of hazardous materials incidents, development of consumer protection regulations, and resolution of consumer and carrier complaints.

What You Will Do:

• Conduct and evaluate complex hazardous material transporter inspections
• Conduct unannounced compliance reviews, shipper reviews and investigations of motor carriers

EMPLOYEES MUST LIVE WITHIN 30 AIR MILES OF 225 E. WASHINGTON ST. MEDINA, OH 44256

PUCO core hours of operation are Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm, however, daily start/end times may vary based on operational need across PUCO departments. Most positions perform work on-site at the PUCO Central Office. The PUCO offers flextime work schedules that allow an employee to start the day as early as 6:00am or as late as 10:30am. Flex-time schedules are based on operational need and require supervisor approval.

Salary Information: Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary is set at the lowest rate of the salary range. In most cases, successful employees will increase a step in the salary range within six months, with subsequent step increases occurring every year. In addition, the State of Ohio offers cost of living adjustments, longevity supplements after five years of public service, and wellness incentives.
