Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Hardware Systems Engineering Scientist on the Pickle Research Campus to join the Space and Geophysics Laboratory. You will lead design work integrating COTS and custom hardware, including GNSS receivers, FPGAs, and RF systems, for government sponsors.

You will elicit requirements, translate them into architecture, decompose work, and guide the team through lifecycle stages while mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science, applied science, or engineering.
  • Three years of relevant professional work experience developing systems requirements and designs.
  • Experience integrating hardware systems into racks, RF distribution, or FPGA-based data acquisition.
  • Ability to design, develop, evaluate, and support large, complex systems.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with stakeholders of varied backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Elicit systems scope and requirements from stakeholders for designs.
  • Develop hardware systems design: scope, requirements, components, interfaces.
  • Communicate work products and results to stakeholders with documentation and briefs.
  • Participate in project planning and decomposition into components.
  • Coordinate lifecycle activities from definition to deployment with stakeholders.
  • Produce engineering estimates, guide schedules, identify dependencies.
  • Conduct evaluations such as trade studies and risk analyses.
  • Mentor junior engineering staff, technicians and students.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.
