Job summary

Super Micro Computer is seeking a Hardware Design Engineer to join our design team in San Jose. You will conduct research, design, develop, and test high-performance server motherboards and related products, working closely with BIOS, firmware, validation, and production teams to deliver robust designs.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on hardware design experience on x86 server motherboards.
• Strong knowledge of digital, analog, and power circuit design and high-speed PCB layout.
• Proficient with Intel architecture, Windows, and Linux OS.
• Experience with oscilloscopes and standard lab test equipment.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Schematic capture and PCB layout review for server motherboards, backplanes, and add-on cards.
• Modify designs to improve performance, quality, and reliability of server products.
• Execute Design Verification Testing (DVT) using oscilloscopes and lab equipment.
• Collaborate with BIOS, firmware, validation, and cross-functional teams to resolve design issues early.
• Create technical documentation and support manufacturing handoff.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will play a critical part in the research, design, development, and testing of high-performance server motherboards and related products. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams and external partners to deliver robust, competitive, and high-quality board designs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for schematic capture, PCB layout review, BOM generation, debugging, and testing of server motherboards, backplanes, and add-on cards
• Modify and enhance existing designs to improve performance, quality, and reliability of server products
• Execute Design Verification Testing (DVT) using oscilloscopes and other lab equipment
• Collaborate with BIOS, firmware, validation, and cross‑functional teams to identify and resolve design and quality issues at an early stage
• Ensure products meet engineering specifications, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations
• Create comprehensive technical documentation, including product specifications, layout guidelines, test procedures, and manufacturing handoff materials
• Support smooth product transfer to manufacturing, provide strong technical support to contract manufacturers and production teams during sample and mass production stages
• Offer technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers within the team
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering; Master’s degree is a plus
• 5+ years of hands‑on experience in hardware design, with a strong focus on x86 server motherboards
• In-depth knowledge of digital, analog, and power circuit design, high‑speed PCB layout, and signal integrity
• Solid understanding of Intel architecture, Windows, and Linux operating systems
• Proven experience with oscilloscopes and standard laboratory test equipment
• Strong problem‑solving and debugging skills for complex hardware issues
• Excellent communication (written and verbal), organizational, and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross‑functional team environment
• Self‑motivated team player who thrives in a fast‑paced, dynamic setting
• Experience with Linux shell scripting and automated testing is a plus

Salary Range

$148,000 - $165,000

The salary offered will depend on several factors, including your location, level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience, and comparison to other employees already in this role. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation, such as participation in bonus and equity award programs.
