Job summary

The Joint Industry Board of the Electrical Industry (JIB) seeks a Handyman to perform maintenance, carpentry, and general repairs in the LIC/Flushing facilities. Duties include equipment upkeep, spill cleanup, snow removal, and assisting with building projects.

Requires a High School diploma (Vocational certificate preferred) and ability to lift up to 100 lbs. The role is temporary, non-exempt, with two daily shifts and potential permanent conversion.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Handyman responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Maintains equipment and supplies in good condition.
• Responsible for Biohazardous spill clean-up and disposal.
• Properly uses a “spill kit” to contain a hazardous spill.
• Snow removal in common area and salt promptly to ensure common area is safe for use at all times.
• Consistently maintains adequate supplies throughout daily workday.
• Performs a complete and thorough cleaning of area assigned (as per work assignment/schedule) in accordance with departmental procedures and Supervisor instructions.
• Inspects and identifies equipment or machines in need of repair.
• Troubleshoots issues to determine necessary repairs.
• Plans repair work using buildings blueprints or equipment manual as needed.
• Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.
• Performs routine maintenance on building systems.
• Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities.
• Inform supervisor of required supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance.
• Performs and completes a variety of carpentry tasks with quality workmanship to construct, maintain, repair, or modify buildings or facilities; tasks may include measuring and marking materials; repairing and replacing floors, roofs, wall sidings, or doors; installing partitions, walls, and doors; erecting scaffolding; and building wood structures.
• Inspects worksites.
• Safely and efficiently operates a variety of power and hand tools to complete jobs accurately and to specifications; such tools may include hammers, saws, drills, planers, and mortising machines.
• Protects furnishings, equipment, and other property during carpentry repairs by properly covering or removing items.
• Restores worksites to original condition by removing debris, scaffolding, and equipment used during the project and returning property, furnishings and equipment to proper location.
• Develops and maintains records regarding time spent and materials used for specific jobs.
• Provides status reports including the status of work projects, materials used, and hours spent performing labor to supervisor or other appropriate project lead.
• Performs spot checks on equipment to ensure proper working condition; services tools and equipment as needed and returns damaged items for repair or replacement.
• Ensures compliance with federal regulations, policies, and laws regarding construction, repairs, and proper environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, or use of chemical substances.
• Follows standard safety precautions; adheres to operators instructions when using power tools; wears recommended protective equipment such as goggles, hearing protectors, and/or work gloves.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This job operates in an indoor and outdoor environment subject to various weather conditions. This role routinely uses standard tools and other industrial equipment.

Physical Demands

Physical work environment demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of this job. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching all day. Work involves exerting up to 50 lbs. of force frequently.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a temporary non-exempt position.

Shift/Schedule 8 hours per day/40 hours per week. Two Shifts Available:

• Monday-Friday from 7:30AM-4:00PM
• Monday-Friday from 1:30PM-10:00PM

Flexibility

Must be able to work overtime when necessary. Ability to work flexible hours, including both morning and evening shifts, as required by departmental needs with notice.

May have to work alternate shift with notice, must be flexible to work either shift.

Travel

Occasional travel required as necessary between JIB buildings (Flushing and LIC).
