Job summary

South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) is seeking a Hands-On Science Activity Specialist for middle school programs in Queens. The role supports project-based science learning, with a school-day schedule and opportunities for growth within a supportive nonprofit environment.

The position emphasizes curiosity, hands-on experiments, and SEL-focused activities, with in-person work from September through June and potential renewal for summer and the following year.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree preferred.
• Strong knowledge of science concepts and the ability to teach them in fun, practical ways.
• Ability to develop and implement project-based learning activities.
• Knowledge and understanding of youth development, after school and public education.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities, people and projects effectively.

Responsibilities

• Supervise all activities to ensure the health, safety and well-being of program participants.
• Develop lesson plans of age-appropriate hands-on science activities and projects that will support the development of social-emotional learning competencies, seek to build skills and encourage collaboration.
• Connect scientific concepts to everyday life so students understand the relevance of what they're learning.
• Use project-based learning strategies to encourage creativity, experimentation, and critical thinking.
• Create a safe and inclusive environment that encourages students to ask questions, take risks, and explore new ideas.
• Provide opportunities for teamwork and collaboration through group experiments and challenges.
• Manage classroom and maintain positive learning environment.
• Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication and overall attitude.
• Ensure proper care of all spaces and materials, organize room and report any misused or damaged materials to the Program Director.
• Complete and submit in a timely manner all program reports relative to this position, including but not limited to: supply request, lesson plans, incident reports, attendance, and timesheets.
• Assist Program Coordinator with ordering and maintaining equipment and/or supplies.
• Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings and special events.
