Job summary

Bowhead Family of Companies seeks an Engineering Technician III to support the Flight Sciences Branch at APG, MD. The role involves assembling weapons, equipment, and instrumentation for ballistic experiments, performing data collection and analysis, and contributing to test planning and SOP development.

You will work with engineers and technicians, operate lab tools, design fixtures in CAD, and fabricate components while adhering to safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Advanced working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and mathematical principles.
  • Experience with common laboratory equipment and diagnostic tools.
  • Working knowledge of computers and basic productivity software (Word, Excel).
  • Excellent attention to detail and understanding of measurement tolerances.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions, specs and test plans for safe, high‑quality experiments.
  • Ability to envision and develop innovative test setups for non‑standard weapons/munitions.
  • Experience with weapons or ammunition is desired but not required.
  • Experience with CAD and fabrication tooling is desired but not required.
  • Job requires significant physical labor; lifting up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Independently set up and prepare weapons, ammunition, and instrumentation for ballistic experiments.
  • Conduct standard and non‑standard experiments as part of a close team of engineers and technicians.
  • Perform advanced experimental data reduction and interpretation using basic math and Excel.
  • Provide recommendations to improve operations with new equipment or methods.
  • Write SOPs for new equipment and experiments.
  • Troubleshoot and correct equipment malfunctions.
  • Design advanced prototype fixtures and machinery in 2D/3D using CAD (Solidworks).
  • Fabricate and modify testing components with lathes, drill presses, milling machines, and 3D printers.
  • Document experimental setup, methodologies, and results in technical reports.
  • Present work to range visitors and outside organizations; share methodologies and findings.
  • Support facility maintenance and long‑term improvements with laboratory leadership.
