Job summary

The City of Thornton is seeking friendly, customer-focused individuals for front desk cashier and receptionist roles at a city facility. This part-time position requires early morning and weekend availability and involves daily guest interaction, registrations, and fee collection.

Under supervision, you will support program operations, process cash transactions, and help ensure smooth customer service. Training and potential overtime may apply.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Six months’ customer service or receptionist experience, preferably dealing with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Provide front desk services and excellent customer service, directing guests and answering questions.
  • Process membership registrations, punch card sales, and photo ID issuance.
  • Handle cash register operations and daily cash balancing.
  • Promote programs and services to center patrons by phone and in person.
  • Maintain records and assist with program registrations during peak periods.
  • Assist with special projects and training junior staff as needed.

Job description

We are looking for dedicated individuals to join our team and support our operations during early morning and weekend facility hours!

Under general supervision, performs cashier and receptionist duties at a city facility and performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions

(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

  • Performs front desk services and operations by providing excellent customer service, including, as applicable, interacting with customers to answer questions and resolve problems, directing customers to proper locations, providing information, scheduling rooms, making reservations, checking equipment in and out, and assisting the public in general.
  • Controls facility admission, including collecting drop-in fees, ID verification, processing membership registrations and punch card sales, and dispensing photo ID cards.
  • Performs cash handling in accordance with city and department cash handling policies. This includes operating a cash register drawer and compiling daily cash balances and deposit reports.
  • Communicates effectively with center patrons in person and over the telephone to market and promote programs and services.
  • Communicates and enforces facility policies and procedures. Observes guest use and informs supervisors of improper facility or equipment use.
  • Assists in the maintenance of various records such as inventory, activity reports, receipts, memberships, reservations, and minor financial accounts.
  • Performs program registration during peak demand periods.
  • Assists with special projects as assigned.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • May be responsible for working the opening and closing shift.
  • May train and mentor less experienced clerks on duties and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years old. Six months’ previous customer service, receptionist, or experience dealing with the public, preferably in a related (i.e., recreation, arts, etc.) setting. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Knowledge of Rec Trac may be required.
  • Skill in organizing and managing multiple competing tasks.
  • Skill in maintaining filing systems.
  • Skill in working independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to provide quality guest services.
  • Ability to handle money accurately, conscientiously, and honestly.
  • Ability to work in a high-usage, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to understand and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including cash register drawer, personal computers, punch card sales equipment, camera, account balancing equipment, facsimile, photocopiers, and multi-line telephones.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, computer equipment and software including word processing, data base management, spreadsheet applications and electronic mail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the general public.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a mature, effective, and responsible manner.
  • Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate keyboard skills necessary for successful job performance.
  • Ability to read, interpret, explain, and enforce policies or procedures to constituents.
Physical and Mental Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, walk, finger, talk, hear, see, and make repetitive motions for prolonged periods. This position is considered “Light Work” which involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have close visual acuity.

Testing Procedures

Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.

Background Investigation and Employment Conditions

As a condition of employment, the city of Thornton conducts background investigations for all positions which may also include a review of credit report and/or driving record. A drug screen, physical, and/or psychological examination administered by a city-designated provider will be required for pre-determined positions.
