Job summary

San Jose State University is seeking a Transition Success Counselor for the Guardian Scholars Program to provide non-clinical, academic and personal guidance to current or former foster youth and unaccompanied homeless students, with referrals to campus and community resources.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
• Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide holistic life skills coaching to Guardian Scholars students.
• Conduct assessments, crisis management, goal setting, and transition plan meetings.
• Monitor progress with check-ins and proactive outreach.
• Maintain records and summary reports of student interactions.
• Serve as GSP liaison and provide support, advocacy, and referrals.
• Assist in development, implementation, and assessment of Trauma Informed programming.
• Work with foster youth programs and advisory councils.
• Attend conferences/meetings and stay informed on legislation affecting foster youth.
• Inform staff of new policies and procedures relating to foster youth.
• Assist graduating Guardian Scholars with post-graduation housing, employment, internships, and graduate school.
